One of the things I love most about where we live in New Hampshire is the plethora of trails and outdoor spaces within a short distance from our home. This trail is maybe a ten minute drive from our house, and I could pretty easily bike here and then hike to a swimming hole if I wanted. Last year we went cross country skiing on this trail on Christmas day, but conditions were a bit less snowy this year.
Normally when I take Winston out for photo shoots, I don't have John with me, and normally when John and I go hiking with Winston, I don't bring a DSLR camera and instead just snap a few quick shots with my iPhone or GoPro. I'm trying to get into the habit of bringing my DSLR with me more often, and it was really nice to have that camera with me today and be able to capture a few shots of my two favorite guys together.
For outings like this that aren't photo centric, I find I typically grab my 5D Mark II, as it is the lighter of my two DSLR bodies, and my "nifty fifty," the 50mm f/1.8 lens. I like shooting with this combo because the lens itself is pretty compact, the wide aperture allows me to shoot in a variety of lighting conditions, and the medium length is usable for most common subjects from landscapes to portraits. Ideally, I'd love to have the newest 5D Mark IV body, as it has much better autofocus and high ISO image quality than my Mark II body, but as they say the best camera is the one you have, and I've been using my 5D2 for years with plenty of success.
All photos with the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 50mm f/1.8, and processed with basic adjustments in Lightroom.
