There are many photographers out there who travel the world taking photos. I am not one of them. Personally, I find it really difficult to just visit someplace once or twice and come away with amazing images. There is something about really getting to know a place, exploring it slowly, finding it's hidden corners and letting it's essence ooze into your being over time. That just doesn't happen when you hop off a plane and head straight to the nearest postcard perfect attraction.

However, seeing a place for the first time also has a certain magic, and I rarely shy away from taking photos when the opportunity presents itself. I've traveled quite a bit throughout the United States and been to ten different countries on five continents, so I consider myself really lucky! When I've been fortunate to go abroad, whether it be because of photography, education, or a personal adventure, I try to keep a camera close at hand, and occasionally I come away with shots I'm really proud of.

Alight in the Dark

A portrait of a sadu dressed in yellow, posing with beads in front of an ancient building in Kathmandu, Nepal. In popular tourist areas of Nepal, such as the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, tourists and photographers can pay a small fee to sadus to be permitted to take their photograph as they go about their daily rituals. The sadus' colorful ornamental clothes and body paint make them interesting subjects.

Bringing Home the Awesome

A rope team from Johns Hopkins University led by Ecuadorian guide Robinson approach the summit of Cotopaxi just before sunrise. Part of the Andean Mountain Range Cotopaxi is one of Ecuador's most popular mountains and it attracts mountaineering expeditions from all over the world. It's high elevation but fairly non-technical slopes make it an ideal climb for beginning and experienced climbers alike hoping to summit a high altitude peak. The summit rises to 5,897 meters or 19,347 feet in height and has more clear summit days than any of Ecuador's other glacier covered volcanic mountains.
