Tulips are one of my favorite flowers and also make an excellent subject for photography. Their cup shape blossoms, smooth stems, and large leaves create elegant lines which allow for beautiful abstract compositions emphasizing shape and color. For this photograph, I found a single tulip stem which split in two at the top and each branch contained a fully developed pink flower. I used a low depth of field and selective focus to create this soft image, allowing the rounded shape of each blossom and soft pink and green hues of the petals and stems to take center stage in this photo. Soft light from a window provided the main lighting source, and I used a simple home made reflector made from aluminum foil and cardboard to bounce light back onto the shadow side of the plant.
