Sunrise over frozen Oneida Lake

This morning, Chris and I visited Toad Harbor Point to photograph sunrise over frozen Oneida Lake. The sky was mostly cloudy, but the rays of the sun shone through an opening in the clouds just long enough for some brilliant color to light up the morning sky for a few different compositions. Then, the color faded, the skies turned to gray, and it started to rain.

Here is one photograph from today that best shows the yellow, orange, and pink colors of this morning’s sunrise. The snow covered ice made for a challenging and interesting foreground while the colors in the clouds added some punch to the sky. Because the bright sun creates very contrasty light, I blended two exposures in Photoshop to create this final image.

Techs: Canon 1D Mark II N, 17-40mm f/4L, blended exposures of 0.3 and 0.5 seconds, f/16, ISO 100.  To order this print, purchase stock rights, or view other photos I have for sale, please visit my website at www.karipost.com.
