What’s better than spending a morning photographing nature? Doing it with someone you love! I’m fortunate that my boyfriend and I share the same passion for nature and wildlife photography, and this means we get to spend a lot of quality time together out in the woods, sitting in blinds, going on wildlife drives, or otherwise shooting side by side.
Last summer Chris and I went camping in the Adirondack region of upstate New York together to photograph Common Loons. Since we both own kayaks, we brought up our boats and launched each morning from our campsite to spend the mornings on the lake with the birds. One morning, it was so foggy that locating the birds was near impossible, so while Chris searched for the loons, I searched for other things to photograph.
I’ve always been a very physically active, on-the-go type of person, and I’ve always loved being outdoors in nature. So activities where you combine being active and being outdoors, like kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, and rock climbing, have always really appealed to me. One of my goals as a nature photographer is to inspire others to see the beauty in nature and teach them to appreciate the natural world, and I think one of the most effective ways to do that is to show other people out in the wilderness enjoying nature. That’s why I like what I call the “Outdoor Recreation/Adventure” genre of photography. While I don’t shoot these type of photos very often, I like to take advantage of good opportunities to photograph people in nature when I see them. That morning, Chris ended up presenting himself as the perfect subject: a lone kayaker, barely visible as he paddles through the dense fog.
