Longtail Salamander on Oak Leaves, Pennsylvania

One of the lightlights of our rainy day Tuesday herping trip was finding Longtail Salamanders, one of the species Chris had really wanted to see and photograph.  Our friend Jeff had a great spot for them and we were able to find a couple dozen of the species, including some rather cooperative individuals like this one.  I posed this adult salamander on these dead oak leaves to illustrate why the Longtail Salamander has its name - their tails are longer than their bodies!

Tomorrow, Chris and I leave for a Memorial Day weekend trip to the Pennsylvania mountains with some herper friends.  There we hope to find and photograph several new herp species as well as some birds and scenery if the opportunities present themselves.  I have my fingers crossed for some new snake and salamander species as well as some feeder birds.  Wish me luck!
