Juvenile Redbelly Snake, Pennsylvania

One of my new species discovered this weekend was the Redbelly Snake, a small snake, either rust or dark gray in color with a belly that ranges from orange to red to pink.  Collectively, our group found eight Redbelly Snakes, including this small individual.  I tried to get this snake to pose with part of its belly showing, but the snake wouldn’t have it, so this is the best photograph I was able to manage.  Hopefully I’ll find more of these pretty snakes soon, and capture photos that better illustrate the namesake of this animal.

Kari, I laughed when I read the young redbelly wouldn’t cooperate. I’ve run into the same problem with the red phase. You may find the gray phase more cooperative.
