In my last post, I told you about a very memorable morning that I spent photographing nature from my kayak on an Adirondack mountain lake last summer.  I have quite a few photographs from that one morning that I love, and this image called “Brushstrokes on a Blank Canvas” is one of them.

Brushstrokes on a Blank Canvas

While photographing the fog from my kayak with my 17-40mm lens, I quickly realized the need for a little bit more focal length, so I paddled back to shore and picked up my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens that I had left out of my dry bag earlier that morning.  Immediately after I relaunched my boat, I noticed the simple shapes and reflections formed by a few long reeds sticking out of the water’s surface.  I allowed my kayak to drift past the reeds, careful not to disturb the calm surface of the water by paddling, and quickly composed this very simple, but rather elegant photograph.

Techs: Canon 1D Mark II N, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, 1/640s, f/7.1, ISO 400.  Handheld from kayak.  To order this print, purchase stock rights, or view other photos I have for sale, please visit my website at www.karipost.com.
