One of my favorite types of photographs to take are wide-angle environmental shots of birds and wildlife showing the animal in it’s natural habitat.  In the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York state, the opportunities for these types of shots are wonderful, especially when the weather conditions cooperate.

Common Loon on Foggy Adirondack Lake

Chris has a favorite lake of his in the Adirondacks where he has returned year after year to photograph loons.  Last year, I made my first trip up there.  Chris and I camped alongside the lake and ventured out on to the water each morning to photograph loons in the early morning light.  One morning the entire area was shrouded in a thick veil of white fog.  Chris and I went out onto the lake, and as we paddled, the early morning sun rose and began to burn through the mist.  The scene was truely beautiful, and by paying attention to what was going on around me, I was able to capture this wide angle shot of an adult Common Loon in breeding plumage swimming along the lake with the vast environment of the Adirondack Mountains covered in a layer of fog in the background.

This rocks, kari! It’s incredible how large in the frame the loon is at that wide of an angle! It would’ve made a nice landscape image, but the loon puts it over the top!

Beautiful shot babycakes. I really like this one, and it’s so different from all of mine.
